How To Become CIOB Chartered Fellow

Becoming a CIOB Fellow (FCIOB) means you are one of the most experienced and knowledgeable professionals in the construction industry. In addition, you will have global recognition for your skills and attainments. Now, the question that must be popping up in your mind is how to become a Fellow of the CIOB.  Therefore, we have written this article to provide you with the answer to this question.

Fellowship requirements:

You need to have 5-year experience in leading an organization and people and contributing to the industry, communities or society. In addition, you must have responsibilities extending to working with sector stakeholders.

This work has to show a contribution to the broader industry or the general public. It could be through industry-specific charities like the Construction Youth Trust or the CIOB. Apart from that, it could be through other stakeholders like communities, schools, universities, community groups, or government agencies.

Fellowship is independently assessed and equivalent to a British Master’s Degree. Expert qualifications agency, UK ENIC does this. The agency also provides information about qualifications to governments and government authorities. Besides that, it also informs education establishments all over the world.

CIOB Fellow Membership application process:

If applying to upgrade from MCIOB, produce a reflective account of a project or initiative you led of 3000 words. Using it, you can demonstrate your competency in leading people and organizations within the sector.

When applying direct for Fellowship, produce an extra 3000-word report. This report must be on a project or initiative you led. This way, you will be able to show that you fulfill the standards of the professional review for MCIOB.

Every candidate attends a professional discussion, a viva voce exam, which lasts for nearly 1.5 hours. Trained professionals (2 evaluators and a chair) conduct this exam. This discussion is about your written project and an interactive discussion on a topical issue affecting the industry.

Before moving ahead with your written application, the authority will ask you to attend a workshop. It will take place in its London or Bracknell Office.  You can also have this via Skype if you can’t attend in person to go through the whole Fellowship process.

To attend this, you need to pay £155. This fee will then be deducted from the £700 Fellowship Assessment fee. The deduction will happen when you submit your final application.

CPD and CIOB Members:

As a Fellow of the CIOB, you have to work on your professional development throughout your CIOB membership. Every member is responsible for the development of their CPD plan and assessing CPD activities. You also need to keep a record of the activities you took on.

The CIOB is not prescriptive about CPD you do or how many hours you have to complete. You are best placed to know what CPD is important and related to you. You are expected to keep an up-to-date record of your CPC activities on your membership profile.

As a CIOB member, it is a must for you to follow the rule under Rule 10 of the CIOB Rules of Professional Competence and Conduct.
