Fake watches: The most accurate clock in all of Baselworld was on the Urwerk stand. Actually called AMC, short for Atomic Master Clock, it’s a new atomic take on the ingenious device invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet called the Pendule sympathique, or “sympathetic clock.”
It was in 1795 that the prolific Abraham-Louis Breguet first described the watch he was working on. He wrote to his son, asking her to be very discreet about the invention: “I have invented a way to adjust and regulate a clock without any human intervention. Every night when you go to bed, you insert the clock into a special clock. In the morning, or an hour later, the clock will have been set exactly to clock time. You don’t even need to open the watch to perform this operation.”
When you place the pocket watch with a specific design in a cradle on top of the watch,
the watch automatically regulates it and sets it to the correct time. This complex operation is carried out by a metal bar that extends from the watch to the pocket watch. This allows the watch mechanism to compare the displayed time with that of the master clock,
to synchronize it by correcting the minute and hour hands, to adjust their speed,
and – an innovation made by Louis Breguet, the son of the celebrated watchmaker – to wind the watch. Simply incredible.
A streaming story
Felix Baumgartner, co-founder of Urwerk with Martin Frei, discovered this fascinating mechanism when he was very young. He still remembers how one afternoon his father,

Hence the idea of recreating a nice watch. But Urwerk, known for its avant-
garde mechanical watchmaking and its formal and technical experimentation, explores a territory such as hybridization
(remember its EMC model, which stands for Electromechanical Control,
which offers ultra-precise electronic measurements of the speed of the total mechanics through a push button ) –
could not be content with simply reproducing Breguet’s invention of 220 years earlier. The craziest option chosen by the creative duo from Urwerk was to turn their attention to the most accurate master clock of all: the atomic clock.
So it is that sympathy has evolved into an ultra-high-precision atomic clock supporting a purpose-built,
fully mechanical wristwatch that rewinds, resets, and regulates itself through a very complex mechanical linkage.
Weighing almost 25 kilos, the Urwerk atomic clock, developed especially for this project, is a type of double oscillator,
using YIG (which stands for yttrium iron garnet) and rubidium ions. It has been designed to work on any voltage, which means it can be put into service anywhere in the world. Rubidium is radioactive,
but there is no need to fear: the radiation level is extremely weak (so low that a single sheet of paper can block it). It is necessary to do it in one second every 317 years.
The watch itself was, of course, specially designed for this AMC project. It interacts with the master clock in three ways: speed regulation: the most complex task: synchronization of the minutes

As with Breguet’s sympathetic watch,
the mechanism that allows the speed of the oscillator to be adjusted is built into the watch. This is caused by a rod that extends into the watch and,

The jaws of the caliper close around a crescent-shaped chamber, which rotates on the axis of the seconds hand. If the time of the atomic clock
and the time of the clock are exactly synchronized to the second,
the jaws of the tweezers fall on the outermost tips of the chamber simultaneously. However, if the timing is not exactly in sync,
one or the other of the gripper jaws will drop more than the other. This makes the camera rotate as well. Due to the shape of the chamber, only one of the two gripper jaws will move.
“But the operation doesn’t stop there. For the tech geeks among you, here’s what happens next: “Each jaw has a tooth on its central pivot,
which engages a toothed wheel with a spiral cut, moving it clockwise or counterclockwise. A pin at the end of the index lever mounts into the spiral cutout. As the hairspring rotates, the pin moves the index lever to speed up or slow down the clock speed. The wheel with the spiral cut is held by a bridge spring against its teeth; each tooth represents an adjustment, plus or minus, of about 2 seconds per day.”
The mechanism for synchronizing the seconds and minutes is similar to the reset-to-zero mechanism on a chronograph. It is activated by a push button fired at a time determined by the atomic clock. Once again, this is how it works: “The push button moves a system of two levers,
the last of which has hammers that fall on heart-shaped cams. The center piece for the seconds display is on the movement’s seconds wheel,
while the rotation of the heart piece for the minutes is transmitted to the minute hand via an intermediate wheel. As in a conventional chronograph,
the heart pieces rotate under the pressure of the hammers until they come to rest with the faces of the hammers at the lowest point of the cams,

As for the winding of the watch, this is the simplest element in this ultra-complex set: a shaft extending from the watch acts on the crown to wind the watch when the latter is placed in its cradle.
A museum piece
This exceptional timepiece required years of research and engineering. But what is the point, we ask Félix Baumgartner, since this atomic precision is not perceptible on a human scale. “It is a watch that belongs, first and foremost, in a museum,” admits Félix, and that is how we will present it.”
